The 2019 girls lacrosse season is officially underway at General Douglas MacArthur High School.
Led by head coach Daniel Agovino, the Generals are geared up for a year of redemption. Last year, the squad went 9-10, allowing 205 goals. But the team is determined to do things differently with new assistant coach Susan Ballintine joining the staff.
“This season expectations are very high,” Agovino said. “The team has adopted our mission statement of ‘never settle’ as our motivation toward success. With our returning players’ experience and the drive and talent of our new players, we expect to make a serious run at the conference championship.”
With a veteran squad, the Generals are prepared to ramp things up on defense. All-Conference goalie Mary Kate Sweeney enters the 2019 season as one of the team’s stars.
Her sister, Tara Sweeney, is expected to stand out on the defense as well.
Returning midfielders Olivia Quitoni and Marisa Misuraca will lead the Generals’ offense this year. Both girls were All-Conference last year, showcasing the potential out of this Generals squad. Additionally, seniors Kelly Cook and Sophia Quitoni are experienced in putting the ball in the net, with high goals for the new season.
“We started out the season with a lot of energy and excitement,” Cook said. “I know my team and I will do great things especially with the help of our coaches. I will help my team by pushing every single athlete to do their very best. “
Besides the team’s pasta parties, an annual tradition to get the girls to know one another, this group is ready for the challenges ahead. They want to succeed, and Agovino believes it will happen.
“Winning a title is a long term goal,” he said. “Right now, we are just focused on taking things one game at a time and getting better every day. In the long term, a title would be special. With three of our four coaches being Levittown alumni, a title would be awesome not only for this year’s team, but all those athletes who have had the privilege to wear the name ‘Generals’ on their jersey.”
