On behalf of the Arbor Day Foundation, the Village of Floral Park has once again earned the recognition of becoming a 2018 Tree City USA in honor to its commitment of effective urban forest management.
Floral Park achieved Tree City USA recognition by meeting the program’s four requirements of having a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance, an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.
“The village is very proud to be once be designated as a Tree City community,” said mayor Dominick Longobardi. “We all love the beauty and majesty of our shade trees. I want to thank Department of Public Works Superintendent Steve Siwinski, Deputy Superintendent Kevin Ginnane and our entire tree division for their never ending work to continually maintain and ensure the long, healthy life of our curb trees and their efforts in operating our tree replacement program, which plants more than 100 new trees every year.”
Trees provide multiple benefits to a community when properly planted and maintained. They help to improve the visual appeal of a neighborhood, increase property values, reduce home cooling costs, remove air pollutants and provide wildlife habitat, among many other benefits.
According to deputy mayor Kevin Fitzgerald, the village’s department of public works will commence with their annual tree planting. If a resident would like a tree planted, they can call the village’s department of public works at 516-326-6319.
