The 2018-19 school year is officially over. Children can finally relax and take a break from the intense life as a student-athlete.

This summer, the Tribune will take a look back at the stars of the region throughout the season. Athletes who were featured throughout the winter and spring seasons excelled, partially due to their innate abilities on the court and field, but also thanks to their peers, who often pick them up when they’re down.

Irene Huguet came to Wantagh from Pamplona, Spain. You might have heard of it. It’s where the Running of the Bulls happens each July. Standing at five-feet, 11 inches, she’s impossible to score against.

Tommy Zamroz from Island Trees High School is a two-time Nassau County weight throw, a multi-time All-County representative in the shot put, a record-holder in the weight throw at Island Trees and on top of that, he’s the vice president of the school’s quiz bowl squad. He holds the school record in the weight throw, his specialty.

Grace Pupke is always on the attack. It’s what she does best on the lacrosse field and off it. A year ago, the Seaford star was named to the All-Conference team. Scoring 38 goals on the year and having 15 assists helped her be recognized for her leadership on the field. She’s a multi-sport athlete, who ventured into volleyball in the seventh grade.

JD Moore from Division Avenue High School won’t stop until he is crowned as a champion. Once Moore met the 170-pound weight requirement, he faced off against Horace Greeley’s Aaron Wolk in the semifinal matchup at the 2019 NYSPHSAA State Championships at Albany’s Times-Union Center in Albany in February.
