The summer is almost over. But children can still relax and take a break from the intense life as a student-athlete.
This summer, the Tribune will take a look back at the stars of the region throughout the season. Athletes who were featured throughout the winter and spring seasons excelled, partially due to their innate abilities on the court and field, but also thanks to their peers, who often pick them up when they’re down.
Division Avenue High School softball star Daniella Roselli, a captain, knocked 32 dingers out of the park throughout her four-year career, the most in Blue Dragon history. She hit so well that the school had to build a home run fence for her. She’s an All-County star who’s heading to Adelphi University.
Good luck getting by Mary Kate Sweeney. Her blocking ability is as impressive as it gets. The MacArthur High School rising senior is one of the girls lacrosse squad’s stars, and she is a leader as well. The two-time All-Conference goalie is one of the top in the
Generals’ conference, racking up 141 saves in 2019 alone.
James Varela is exactly what Levittown needs. He’s a beast pitcher, attempting to make it to the major leagues. The former Division Avenue star is now in the Angels organization, working his way up as he works on his mechanics. Currently, he’s playing single-A ball.
Varella attended Long Island University, where he was a standout as a starting pitcher. He holds several of LIU’s pitching records, which will won’t be topped.
