The Garden City School District welcomed the newest members of its instructional staff for an orientation prior to the start of the school year. The new faculty enjoyed three days of training as they got to know the district, beginning with a warm welcome from district leaders.
Board of education President Angela Heineman, trustee Stephanie Granville and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kusum Sinha were all on hand to greet the new faculty on their first day of orientation, as were PTA leaders, school administrators and coordinators. Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources and Leadership Development Nanine McLaughlin provided introductions and Sinha outlined the district’s mission, vision and goals.

During the course of the three days, new teachers also participated in technology workshops conducted by Director of Education Technology and Staff Development Dr. Rita Melikian, and a workshop on active learning and lesson planning provided by Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Dr. Edward Cannone, and were given overviews of various district departments and procedures by each area’s respective administrator. McLaughlin also reviewed important policies, supervision and evaluation procedures and led a workshop to help every new teacher maximize their talents and utilize the resources available to them in Garden City. Stewart Avenue School Principal Linda Norton led a bus tour of the district to familiarize the group with seven of the district’s schools, as well.

Teachers also met with their respective principals and curriculum area coordinators, while also developing a sense of camaraderie with their new colleagues and the leadership team.
