Honors Garden City’s 150th anniversary
The Garden City Historical Society’s Annual Benefit will take place on Friday, Sept. 20, beginning at 7 p.m. at the Garden City Hotel. This year, the society honors three of Garden City’s local heroes: The Mollie Biggane Melanoma Foundation and Maggie and Jack Biggane; The Andy Foundation and Jill Palmeri; and the Garden City Athletic Association Challenger Sports Program and Al Vanasco.
The Music
During cocktails, guests will be entertained by young pianist, composer and Garden City native, Andrew Andron, who has been captivating New York audiences for more than a decade. He began his musical journey at the age of three when he first discovered the piano; by the age of 10, he began performing throughout New York’s most renowned music venues, appearing alongside some of the world’s most legendary musicians. He has toured internationally and has performed in venues including The Village Vanguard, Birdland, The Blue Note, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, Carnegie Hall in New York City. He has had the great honor and privilege of working and performing with artists such as Barry Harris, Les Paul, Richie Cannata, Chad Lefkowitz-Brown, Alex Sipiagin and Arturo O’Farrill and the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra.
Dinner and dancing will follow with exciting entertainment, including The Hombres— whose music ranges from the earliest days of rock ‘n roll, through interpretive covers by some of the all-time greats: Carl Perkins, Eddie Cochran, Johnny Cash, the early Stones, Johnny Rivers, The Everly Brothers and Dion. The Hombres have been featured in venues from Manhattan to the Mid-Atlantic, including local hangouts such as Repeal, The Cornerstone Pub and the Garden City Village Pool.
The evening’s music and dancing program continues with The Chiclettes, performing songs of great female entertainers — from The Supremes to Gloria Gaynor, Madonna and beyond. Various incarnations of The Chiclettes have shared the stage with such performers as The Drifters, Johnny Maestro & the Brooklyn Bridge, Lou Christie, Southside Johnny, Little Anthony and The Imperials, and The Crystals. Their harmony talents have been used to back up other artists such as Lou Christie, Mel Carter, Jimmy Clanton, and Ron Dante.
The Excitement
Eleven “trips of a lifetime” have been designed for auction at the Sept. 20 Benefit. Dream of traveling to tropical Costa Rica, Greece and the Greek Islands, on Alaskan Cruise or seeing the castles of Ireland, Italy’s romantic Amalfi Coast, or the wine, wonders and romance of France (Paris and The Loire Valley) and more. Special auction items for lucky bidders include an elegant candlelit dinner for 8, catered by Prime, at the Historical Society Museum; a $500 gift certificate to the pro shop at the Garden City Golf Club; an outrageous dessert basket stuffed with tantalizing and delicious desserts and beverages; landscape design by Albert, partnering with Paul’s Nursery in Glen Head; a professional, family photography session, tickets to sporting events, a Small Business Starter Kit for iCloud including IT advisory, plus free software for a year from Five Nines Consulting and much more.
A 50/50 raffle will be on-going, $25 a ticket or 3 for $65. You need not be present to win.
The Special Tribute
The society will be highlighting the 150th anniversary of the founding of Garden City by Alexander T. Stewart through a photo display and a visual presentation, to raise awareness of this community’s rich history.
The Tickets, Sponsorships and E-Journal
Tickets at $150 per person can be purchased, cash or credit card, at the Society’s A.T. Stewart Exchange at the rear of the Museum, 109 Eleventh St., Tuesdays to Fridays, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays, noon to 4 p.m., or on the society’s website, www.tgchs.org/2019-benefit. Guests who wish to sit with friends are encouraged to make their intention known when purchasing tickets. A portion of the ticket price is tax deductible. No tickets will be sold at the door the evening of the event.
Sponsorships are available at numerous levels, from $250 up. E-journal ads can be placed, from $5,000 to $100 levels.
