Not unlike the ancient Greek armies Garden City’s and Elmont’s mascots are named for, both high school football teams took to the field for battle. Unfortunately for the Spartans, the Trojans’ side of this gridiron conflict was decidedly one-sided. Long Island’s reigning Class II football champions welcomed Elmont onto Warren King Field, where the hosts proceeded to decimate their guests via a 27-0 shutout.
While the first quarter ended in a scoreless tie as both teams were feeling each other out, Elmont squandered a prime scoring opportunity when it turned the ball over on downs from inside the 5-yard line rather than kick a field goal. By halftime, Garden City was up 17-0, thanks to a pair of Ford Carney touchdowns, the first a 1-yard dive into the end zone followed by a 10-yard run. Chase Gardi kicked both extra points in addition to a 20-yard field goal.

The Trojans continued the rout in the third quarter, when Luke Schmitt connected with Pierce Archer on a 43-yard touchdown pass. Gardi kicked another extra point and finished the scoring with a fourth quarter field goal, splitting the uprights from 31 yards out.
With this victory, the Trojans are now at 38 consecutive wins and counting with the next opponent on the slate being the H. Frank Carey High School Seahawks, who will be hosting Garden City on their home field on Saturday, Sept. 28, at 2 p.m.
