The Division Avenue High School Blue Dragons took to the field for their annual homecoming battle on Oct. 11. While the on-field performance might not have been what the varsity football squad expected, the Levittown fans showcased plenty of school spirit.
The Blue Dragons took to the field against the Floral Park High School Knights. But Division Avenue would have little to brag about on the field.
Floral Park’s offense was on fire to start the match, with quarterback Jack Nolan launching a 45-yard pass to Taliek Nelson for a first-quarter touchdown. Division’s only score throughout the game came in the second quarter.
Vincent Munge, an outside linebacker, recovered a fumble, darting 21 yards past the Knights’ offense for a touchdown. But the Blue Dragons’ offense failed to get going. The Blue Dragons lost, 28-7, dropping to 1-4 on the year.
Despite the loss, the Division Avenue crowd made sure to have plenty of fun.
Central and building administrators, board members, students and staff proudly held banners and waved as they made the journey along the parade route from Northside Elementary School to Division Avenue High School. Community members cheered as the Wisdom Lane Middle School Marching Band and Division Avenue High School marching band played throughout the streets and students threw candy to excited spectators.
Division Avenue seniors from the marching band, color guard, cheer, kickline and football teams were announced on the field with their loved ones during a moving flower ceremony.
Attendees were then invited to enjoy a variety of different booths, which featured raffles, food, drinks, school apparel, merchandise and more.
A moment of silence was held in memory of beloved Division Avenue English and journalism teacher Michael Verdi, who unexpectedly died recently. Throughout the evening, t-shirts were sold in honor of Verdi, who made a positive impact on the school community.
During the halftime spectacular, the marching band, color guard, kickline and varsity cheerleaders entertained the crowd and members of the homecoming court were announced on the field.
Emily Fuchs was crowned princess, Michael Sullivan was crowned prince, Erin Cacciuttolo was presented as homecoming queen and Brandon Martinez was named homecoming king.
