Family Children’s Association (FCA), a Long Island not-for-profit organization, has named Sylvia Cabana as the newest member to its board of trustees. Cabana is the sole proprietor of an immigration law practice in West Hempstead specializing in immigration and family law. Since 2001, the Law Office of Sylvia A. Cabana hasacted as a full-service immigration law firm focusing on servicing Central and South American clientele in obtaining legal permanent residency and citizenship from inception through trial/hearing. Her trial experience includes political asylum trials, cancellation of removal trials and adjustment of
status and citizenship hearings. Her family law practice includes child support hearings, visitation rights, and custody and Special Immigrant Juvenile hearings.
In 2017, Cabana became the first Latin woman to be elected Hempstead Town Clerk, the largest township in the United States consisting of more than 800,00 residents.
Cabana oversaw vital records such as birth, death and marriage certificates, marriage licenses, performance of marriage ceremonies, passport processing, translation of passport, marriage and birth documents from English to Spanish, development and
execution of mobile passport unit, as well as implementation of senior ID and child safety programs, modernization of the clerk’s office via installation of credit card processing systems and on-line permit applications.
The daughter of immigrants, Cabana was raised in Garden City. Her father came to the United States from Argentina and her mother from Cuba. She resides in Garden City with herhusband and two children.
Cabana received her BA from Barnard College, Columbia University and her JD from Hofstra School of Law. Her career as an immigration attorney for the past 20 years has taught her the importance of family values and providing opportunity for people of all ethnicities.
She was previously Garden City Indivisible for Democracy vice president and Nassau Democratic Women’s Caucus secretary. She is currently a member of the PTA,
SEPTA, Garden City Indivisible for Democracy, Nassau Democratic Women’s Caucus and the Nassau Bar Association.
Cabana is humbled and excited by her new appointment.
