THE MAYOR’S UPDATE
Village Hall and the administrative offices are open for in-person inquiries and business, and all full-time staff has returned to the on-site workplace. Office hours are between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Visitors are required to wear a face covering, maintain social distancing of six feet and sign in to a Visitor’s Log outside of the office they are visiting. Furthermore, while multiple people can enter Village Hall, only one person will be admitted into each office space at a time and are asked to abide by employee instructions. Please don’t forget to wear a mask and to practice social distancing.
IMPROVED LIGHTING COMES TO COMMUNITY PARK FIELDS
This month, new LED lights were installed at Fields 3 and 4 at Community Park, — a welcome next step to the original project that reconstructed the fields — updated and modernized underground wiring and brought synthetic infields to Fields 3 and 4. The existing lights have aged and the foot candles have been reduced due to the non working lights tied to failed ballasts. This would require a significant investment to replace and maintain this older inefficient technology. “The new LED lights bring improved lighting, efficiency and the technology to control their operation remotely through a computer or mobile device,” Village Administrator Ralph Suozzi said.
PRESENTATION ON ST. PAUL’S
With vine removal complete, Walter Beal of CNY will be updating the Board of Trustees on the next steps in the rehabilitation of St. Paul’s while Courtney Riley of VHB Engineering will discuss the abatement project. The presentation will take place at the Thursday, October 1, 2020 Board meeting, which begins at 8:00 p.m. at St. Paul’s Cluett Hall. Please wear a mask.
BUSINESS DISTRICT PAVING STONES
Trustees will discuss the proposed project to rehabilitate paving stones in the business districts (Franklin Avenue, Seventh Street and New Hyde Park Road) at a regular Board meeting Thursday, October 1, 2020. Back in July, the first and second lowest bidders withdrew their bids, citing financial hardship attributed to the pandemic and lockdown. The decision to re-bid was made in order to ensure the Village receives the best possible rates for this very large project, according to Public Works Superintendent Joseph DiFrancisco. The meeting is being held at 8:00 p.m. in St. Paul’s Cluett Hall. Please wear a mask.
DRIVE-THROUGH FLU SHOT PROGRAM
Senator Kevin Thomas is partnering with the Garden City Recreation and Parks Department and CVS Pharmacy to offer a drive-through flu shot program in the St. Paul’s Field House parking lot, located at 293 Stewart Avenue, on Thursday, October 7, 2020. Shots will only be given from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. There are no other activities scheduled at this time.
The Recreation and Parks Department has hosted this program almost every year since the 1990s – first at the Senior Center and, in recent years, in the Field House as part of Recreation’s sponsored “Senior Health Fair”. It was first run in conjunction with Nassau County and NYU-Winthrop. Once it switched to a full health fair, our New York State Senator now sponsors it.

HELP KEEP TURF FIELDS PRISTINE
The Recreation Department is asking residents and visitors alike to help the Village keep its new turf fields in pristine condition. Recreation Department personnel remind us all that no chairs of any kind are permitted on any of our synthetic turf fields. Metal cleats, gum and sunflower seeds are also prohibited. Sharp objects such as tent stakes, corner flags and poles that may penetrate or damage the turf are prohibited also.
NATIONAL GRID WORK ALONG STEWART AVENUE MEDIAN
National Grid will be performing infrastructure upgrades in the intersection of Stewart Avenue, from Franklin Avenue to Clinton Road. The project is intended to upgrade and modernize existing infrastructure to increase reliability, safety and service. This project is slated to be complete in the winter, weather dependent. National Grid crews generally work between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday (occasional non-weekday work may be required). Traffic will remain open during construction hours. All work will be done in the median on Stewart Avenue. A traffic flagger will be on-site during work hours to safely direct vehicles. Every National Grid employee carries a photo ID card, and any contractor doing work for us is also required to carry ID. KEEP HOUSE NUMBERS VISIBLE FOR EMERGENCY PERSONNEL
Before you know it, homes in Garden City will soon be decorated with wreaths and garlands reflecting the holiday season. Our police and fire departments are urging homeowners to take particular care in their decorating so as not to impair the visibility of their house numbers. A properly displayed house numeral will save precious minutes when our emergency services are responding to your home — house numbers are also difficult to read/find at night if they are not illuminated. Please cooperate and help us to help you. For those of you who do not have clearly visible numbers on your house – please install them. We bet that you have run into this problem yourself, perhaps when dropping off a child at someone’s home for a party, and you drive up and down a street guessing which house is the correct one. In an emergency situation, we believe that you would not want our police, ambulance or fire department personnel trying to guess which house is the right one.
