Garden City Mayor Theresa Trouvé helped distribute Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) kits to local businesses in downtown Garden City on Friday, Dec. 4.
The village received approximately 50 boxes of PPE kits from Hempstead Town Supervisor Don Clavin’s office in late November and worked with the Garden City Chamber of Commerce to identify businesses within the village that had a need for PPE. Domenick Stanco, deputy superintendent of the Department of Public Works, and Street Department employee Frank Brusack, assisted the mayor.
A day earlier, Hempstead Town Clerk Kate Murray delivered approximately 10,000 face masks to the village’s first responders in the police and fire departments. Each PPE kit comes fully equipped with the necessities needed to follow appropriate COVID-19 protocols: a contactless infrared digital thermometer; five face shields; eight boxes of 50 three-ply masks; two boxes of 100 pairs of powder-free vinyl gloves; two gallons of hand sanitizer with a spray pump; a canister of 1,500 sanitizing wipes.
This initiative is made possible through funding from the federal CARES (Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security) Act. President Donald Trump signed the $2.2 trillion stimulus bill into law on March 27 in response to the economic fallout of the pandemic. Garden City was just awarded a $221,000 reimbursement grant through the CARES Act to help offset COVID-19 related expenditures.
Mayor Trouvé learned about the CARES ACT help as a result of her membership in Hempstead Town Supervisor Don Clavin’s weekly mayors’ meetings.
“We were all provided with a generous number of PPE boxes,” Trouvé said. “Dennis Donnelly, executive director of the Chamber of Commerce, provided us with a list of merchants who could put these free materials to good use, and Karen Altman, village clerk, worked out the details. It was a pleasure to visit the shops and restaurants to greet these dedicated people. Public Works Deputy Superintendent Domenick Stanco, Frank Brusack, a Street Department employee, and I were pleased to bring these boxes of joy out to our Business District to celebrate this joyful Yuletide season. You could feel Christmas in the air.”
