Award-winning spirits line launched by professional sports rivals
February 22 is National Margarita Day. The margarita cocktail is the most common tequila-based cocktail served in the U.S., consisting of tequila, triple sec and lime or lemon juice. A key ingredient is notably the freshly squeezed juice.
The story behind the four expressions of Cincoro Spirits tequila is quite unexpected. In July 2016, a group of friendly professional basketball rivals, Jeanie Buss (Los Angeles Lakers owner), Wes Edens (Milwaukee Bucks owner), Emilia Fazzalari and Wyc Grousbeck (Boston Celtics owners) and Michael Jordan (only one of the greatest basketball players of all time, Chicago Bulls fame and owner of the Charlotte Hornets) met for dinner. They began the evening as acquaintances and after sharing stories and discovering a mutual love of tequila, they quickly formed the partnership. The five friends starting a company from scratch, ensuring their vision for a new style of tequila that was smooth on the palate, rich and complex in flavor, with a long luxurious finish.
Cincoro tequila is made with the highest quality, 100 percent Weber Blue agave from private farms in both the highland and lowland regions of Jalisco, Mexico.
“We set out to create a sipping tequila that is ultra-smooth, naturally rich, complex and delicious; a tequila with exceptional taste,” said Fazzalari, chief executive officer and founding partner of Cinco Spirits.
The agave is hand-selected, slow-cooked and distilled in separate small batches, creating two distinct distillates, which are artfully blended to create Cincoro Blanco (fresh, cooked agave, citrus, lime, grapefruit, black pepper, unaged, $70), one of four Cincoro expressions. The Reposado (smooth, cooked agave, caramelized vanilla, white chocolate, aged 8-10 months, $90), Añejo (rich and complex, toasted oak, butterscotch, orange, dark chocolate, aged 24-28 months, $130) and Extra Añejo (elegant, dried fruit, fig, baked spices, light coffee, aged 40-44 months, $1,600) expressions are barrel-aged in an underground cellar to maximize flavor and complexity. The signature Cincoro taste profile highlights the terroir of the agave, and each expression is a one-of-a-kind tequila experience akin to a single malt scotch, American craft bourbon or fine wine.
“Through hard work, determination and collaboration with our amazing group of founders and extended team, we have brought to life Cincoro Tequila,” said Fazzalari. “We believe each of our four Cincoro expressions provides a unique tequila experience that can transcend the category.”
To complement the exquisite tequila, the team commissioned Mark Smith, vice president of innovation special projects at Nike, to design the bottle, packaging and brand identity. The sleek, contemporary and unique bottle is a glass sculpture of the agave leaf that highlights the liquid with a five-sided base, showcasing the Cincoro Fire Agave icon in the punt at a 23-degree angle, topped with a king’s crown crystal stopper. The name Cincoro, translating to “five gold” in Spanish (“cinco” meaning five, “oro” meaning gold), pays homage to the five founding partners and their pursuit to create the gold standard in tequila.
