Annie Chen has many achievements to her name—she has been recognized as a National Merit Semifinalist and AP Scholar, and is a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society and Music Honor Society. Additionally, Chen was one of only five applicants chosen for an internship at the Department of Pathology in the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Weekdays between July 20 and Aug. 29, Annie commuted three hours to participate in the internship’s eight-hour shifts.
In the lab, she was responsible for tissue slides containing tumors along with lab samples. Part of her work involved labeling sample types and routing them to the proper, respective facilities, and another aspect required creating spreadsheets for patient information and sample types. Annie took the opportunity to do further research on tumors and their lab analysis. She also learned more about the policies of working in a medical facility and was taught hospital conduct, patient confidentiality and emergency procedures.
