Mom’s Ceramics Studio in Massapequa, which made headlines at the start of the coronavirus pandemic for creating ceramic angels and delivering them to hospitals to boost healthcare heroes’ spirits, is now fighting to keep its doors open.
Owner Catherine Camisa and her landlord were discussing renewing her studio’s lease when the coronavirus pandemic forced her to close shop for months, prompting the landlord to file a lawsuit against Camisa for $87,000 in months of unpaid back rent. But if Camisa can raise up to $25,000, the lawsuit will be dropped.
“It’s a good spot here, he’s been a good landlord, and I want to pay him,” Camisa said.
In business for more than six years, the ceramics studio has been home for many birthday parties, classes, and ceramics sales. For its service to the community, residents have been rallying behind the studio.
There are multiple events taking place in hopes to raise money from around the community. Camisa is holding “Peep Palooza” at Zona Restaurant on March 10, which is being expanded to a virtual event due to the event being sold out in just two days. Dinner and a basket of ceramic peeps will be provided.
Along with that event, there will be a Peep Palooza pregame raffle event that will be held on March 6 and 7 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Mom’s Ceramics Studio. Auctioned off will be hundreds of gift baskets received from members of the community and other businesses. The event will be live streamed for those in the restaurant and watching live.
For $30, supporters can purchase a basket of ceramic peeps that you can paint in the comfort of your own home and join in on Facebook Live for the event.
“I couldn’t be more blessed or more grateful,” Camisa said of the support.
