On Monday, March 22, at 7:30 p.m., the Mineola-Garden City Rotary Club will welcome Kathy Dubuke, science teacher at Garden City High School. Dubuke will speak on Zoom on adapting to remote and hybrid teaching throughout the pandemic.
Dubuke says that teachers always look for “teachable moments”—events that spark discussions with their students that are important – even if they are not in the original scope of the lesson. She reports that adapting to remote and hybrid teaching has been a year of “teachable moments” for her students as well as herself.
Dubuke has taught chemistry, biology and physics for 17 years—three at Mepham High School and 14 at Garden City High School. This year she has been teaching Regents chemistry and anatomy and coaches the air rifle team in addition.
This is a second career for Dubuke. Her original BS degree was in medical technology. She has worked in hospitals, research labs, clinics and private labs before pursuing her Masters degree. Dubuke maintains that these experiences have influenced how she teaches.
“I always have stories about how science affects ‘real life’,” she says.
