During a recent board meeting, trustees discussed village trees and sidewalks. Trustee John Delany stated that this has been an issue for many years and that some village-owned trees generate sidewalk repairs. The discussion included mention that (legally, by local law in the village code) adjacent homeowners are currently liable for repairs to sidewalks, even when village tree roots cause the damage. According to Village Administrator Ralph Suozzi, during a five-year period (2016-2020), the village averaged $531,000 per year in repairs—approximately $200,000 for aprons/curbs and approximately $300,000 for sidewalk repairs. The estimated village tree root influence is estimated to be around 50 percent, possibly up to 60 percent of that $300,000, based on estimates of the paving program defined in each fiscal year, Suozzi further noted. Public Works Deputy Superintendent Domenick Stanco explained the process of surveying the sidewalk flags. The village will continue its policy regarding sidewalk replacement and is reviewing sidewalk defects caused by village tree plantings, as well as the cost of such remedial repairs to homeowners.
Friday Night Promenade Schedule
Enjoy hospitality Garden City style every week this summer as the Village of Garden City and the Garden City Chamber of Commerce once again present “Friday Night Promenades” on Seventh Street. Festivities kick off at 6 p.m. Seventh Street is closed to all vehicular traffic and parking beginning at 5:45 p.m. Enjoy live music and plenty of activities for the kids, including balloon art and face painting. Tables and chairs will be set up in the street for additional seating and outdoor dining along Seventh Street.
