Kindness Counts At Old Country Road Elementary School

The Public Information Office visited the Old Country Road Elementary School on Oct. 8, to meet a special second grade student, Ainsley McGuire, whose teacher is Jennifer McEvoy. Afterwards McEvoy read aloud from the Abby Klein’s Reddy Freddy book, Kindness Counts!

It was this book that inspired McGuire to start her own kindness chain similar to the one depicted in story. Kindness Counts! tells the story of Freddy and he is assigned to do a special good deed for the biggest bully in the second grade during Random Acts of Kindness week at his school, so he makes a kindness chain. McGuire explained, “You pick a name to go first and do something kind to the next person’s name picked.”

Each student was able to pick a name and conduct a kind act towards him or her as was done for them. The classmates’ names are proudly displayed in the hallway at Old Country Road Elementary in a kindness chain. These random acts of kindness were so well received that Old Country Road Elementary Principal Laura McConnell decided to expand the kindness train to all classrooms in the building. Kindness is contagious.
