There’s never been a more purrfect time to adopt a homeless pet. With Thanksgiving quickly approaching, let’s help give these cats and dogs something they can be thankful for: A forever home!
Available for adoption at the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter
Harvey is one gorgeous boy who came to the shelter as a stray after being found standing in the middle of the road by a good Samaritan. Thankfully, he was not hit by a car, and was easily coxed into their car to safety. Harvey is a big, 90-pound boy, who is super friendly, energetic, and playful. He is kind of like a big puppy who hasn’t had any structure or basic training, although he does know the command sit, so we are off to a good start! Harvey seems to be under-socialized with other dogs, so he may prefer being an only dog, or perhaps live with a low-key friend.
If you are interested in learning more and getting the most up to date information on Harvey, please contact the shelter’s placement team at 516-785-5220 or adoption@tohmail.org.
Available for adoption at the Town of Smithtown Animal Shelter
Meet the Smithtown Animal Shelter’s Pet of the Week, Mia! This sweet 3-year-old girl has a heartbreaking story, arriving at the animal shelter after she was hit by a car. Fortunately, she ended up with only minor scrapes and fractures in her foot. Her previous owner could not afford medical treatments, so she was surrendered to the shelter as a result. Mia grew up as a yard dog, where she didn’t get much exposure to others. Despite initially being scared and injured, her time in the animal shelter has helped her come out of her shell, and she has shown how goofy, affectionate, playful, and loving she can be. Mia’s favorite activities include walks and playing with toys! She also adores getting treats and snuggling up with her favorite people. It takes her some time to get used to strangers, but once you become friends with her, she’ll reward you with kisses for life. Mia would do well in homes with non-dominant dogs that are her size.

Available for adoption at North Shore Animal League America
Seven-year-old Asia (Adoption #WV0817) had no idea how lucky she was to be rescued from an overcrowded municipal shelter last spring. This stunning sweetie started her journey tentatively which only endeared her more to all of her Animal League America fans. But it was a sudden medical crisis that had everyone rallying to support her. Thanks to the wonderful care she received for Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency — a covered medical condition through NSALA’s Pet Health Centers — she has bounced back to life with an extra dose of enthusiasm for the heroes who saved her. Asia has been in a wonderful foster home to finish her recovery and is now ready to find the heroes who’ll love her furrever. She is seeking a family (with any children over age 12) and adults with experience nurturing cats. Caring for Asia is very simple; a sprinkle of supplement in her food is gobbled up with gusto! Loving Asia is even easier. Head butts and ear rubs are your ticket to paradise!
While everyone was celebrating barbecues and beach days this summer, 2-year-old momma July (Adoption #NCI2115) was tucked away in the quietest place NSALA had to offer her. Motherhood was wearisome work for July. A quiet, predictable home with children ages 12 and above and experienced adults will help this timid friend embrace a new indoor lifestyle, erasing her doubts with a gentle ear rub, and a promise that her challenging past is behind her. She’s already opening up to playtime with trusted friends in the most endearing way! Her bright future as a treasured pet is what awaits for her.
There’s a lot to love about 2-year-old Alice (Adoption #NCI2299) — not just her oversized tummy but also her life-of-the-party cattitude! This young beauty came to NSALA through their sister shelter in Glen Falls, NY and she’s hoping the move downstate opens up new opportunities for a fun party lifestyle she’s interested in purrsuing. She’s shown everyone she’d prefer a quiet life as the only pet — and she’ll make sure you know she’s all you need. Looking for someone to brighten your day and fill your home with laughter? Alice wants to live there with you!
**Double Adoption** When Sheba (Adoption #H209574) and Kong (Adoption #H209575) lost their home recently, NSALA offered them a comfortable place to wait for their new family to find them. Sheba has done an amazing job shaking off the past trauma, and contentedly sniffs new discoveries around her sunny room in Bianca’s Furry Friends Feline Adoption Center. This stunning lady always makes sure her tentative brother Kong knows she’s there for him when he needs an extra dose of support, but Kong has also found comfort in the lap of a visiting friend. A quiet home (with children ages eight and above) is all these dedicated 3-year-old siblings need to settle back into family life. Sheba and Kong are FIV+ which may give unknowing humans pause, but there’s no reason to; they’re living their best life, safe indoors. Don’t miss out on two grateful friends waiting to show you how much their second chance means to them.
Lovely Lorelai (Adoption #NCI2424) is quite content to lounge around a sunny room. She’s earned a life of luxury after a rough start as a hard-working momma cat from upstate New York. Now that her nursery duties are behind her, this tender 1-year-old tuxedo has plenty of time to accept ear rubs from admirers. She’s really hoping to turn one of them into her ride home. If you’d like to give Lorelai a piece of your heart, she’s more than happy to offer you all of hers.
Marvelous Mittens (Adoption #H211189) is taking his time adjusting to the sudden changes in his life, but with his supporters nurturing him, he’s opening up to the idea that better days are indeed ahead. Three-year-old Mittens is FIV+, possibly a nod to a turbulent life outside before coming to NSALA. They’ve assured him he’ll always be loved and nurtured in a safe space, and they’re delighted to help him resume a peaceful life in a quiet home where he can shine brightly with all the gratitude, he has stored up inside for you! Are you and Mittens the perfect pair?
When you adopt 1-year-old Marta (Adoption #LA1300), you’re getting purrfection. This older kitten knows how to have fun and knows when it’s time for tender cuddles with her humans. Marta is a fabulous choice for first time adopters. Families with children are going to be charmed daily by her sweet playful spirit. Don’t miss out on adding someone lovely to your wonderful family today!
At just six months old, Brownie (Adoption #R166601) gets brownie points for being the most outgoing boy from his Hawaiian rescue! This understated tabby has a way of pouring himself straight into your heart with just a single blink of the eye. Brownie is a wonderful choice for any family, especially one with children and/or other cats, looking for someone fun and sweet to include in their play time!
