Dutch Lane School’s Not So Scary Scarecrows

At Dutch Lane Elementary School, students in Taylor Tingle Devlin’s class worked together to create a scarecrow in conjunction with the district-wide Olweus Bullying Prevention Program. The Olweus program focuses on improving peer relations. Devlin’s class was working on taking turns and cooperation.

The students listened to a story about a scarecrow. Then, they voted on the name Jack for their scarecrow. Next, they took turns stuffing his body. The class also made large paper scarecrows that was proudly decorating the hallway. The students used their fine motor skills to decorate the scarecrows and had a scarecrow parade. The class followed up with a variety of other learning activities which included describing scarecrows and writing about them. “I am going to read a story with Jack”, Faris said, right after completing the project. It was a fun-filled day.
