Famous pop musicians John Legend and Jason Derulo will perform a special concert at UBS Arena on May 29, the venue and Northwell Health, the presenter, announced Wednesday.
The concert is a part of Northwell’s “Side by Side: A Celebration of Service 2022” music series, which will kick off Memorial Day weekend by honoring military veterans. This is the fourth year that New York’s largest healthcare system will host the event but its first time at the new UBS Arena at Belmont Park in Elmont. Performers in past years have included Imagine Dragons, Katy Perry, Boyz II Men, and Gavin DeGraw.
“Memorial Day weekend is a dedicated time every year to reflect on the sacrifices so many Americans have made in our country’s history,” said Michael Dowling, president and CEO of Northwell. “We should never take for granted the freedoms we enjoy in this country or forget our heroes in the armed forces who will stop at nothing to protect those freedoms. We are honored to host ‘Side by Side: A Celebration of Service’ for those very reasons – to honor our service members.”
Northwell’s big event aims to bring people together to raise funds for veterans. The concert kicks off Fleet Week in New York City. Also, on May 28, Northwell will host a free block party event hosted by actor Alfonso Ribeiro, with a special appearance by musician Questlove, at Flatiron Plaza in New York City. More details will be available next month.
Legend, a soulful R&B singer and pianist, will take a break from his Love in Las Vegas residency for the Long Island benefit show, while Derulo, a pop and hip-hop artist and dancer, will not be touring at that time. Both stars have worldwide fame with radio hits such as Legend’s “All of Me” and Derulo’s “Want to Want Me.”
“We are so excited to host this fun-filled event with a live audience both in the streets of New York City and on the stage of UBS Arena with John Legend and Jason Derulo,” said Juan Serrano, vice president of Northwell’s Military Liaison Services and a U.S. Marine veteran. “This is a two-day celebration of our country’s military service members, but it also signifies Northwell’s commitment to our veterans for the other 363 days of the year. We will always stand by our heroes in uniform and their families. We owe them our full support and a debt of gratitude.”
Tickets to the live performance by John Legend and Jason Derulo will go on sale Thursday, April 14 at 10 a.m. with the code BELMONT and Friday, April 15 to the general public. The UBS Arena, the new home of the New York Islanders, has been hosting concerts and comedy shows since it first opened late last year.
