Pit bulls are not only the most common type of dog found in animal shelters, but also the most misunderstood. In recognition of Pit Bull Awareness Month, we’re sharing some facts about these magnificent pups.
- “Pit bull” isn’t an actual breed, rather a general term used to describe large and stocky dogs with big heads
- Pit bulls can’t lock their jaws. In fact, they have less biting power than Dobermans, Rottweilers, and German Shepherds.
- According to The American Temperament Test Society, “pit bulls” have a passing rate of 84.5% or better compared to the 77% passing rate of the general dog population.
So don’t wait. Head down to your local animal shelter and change the life of a pit bull.

**Special Request – Senior Alert** What sweetheart 10-year-old Hollie needs is a home that will care for her special needs and love her unconditionally. This beautiful and affectionate girl was taken in as a stray. She had suffered long term bilateral ear infections that caused her heavy scarring of her outer ears, severe thickening of her ear canals, hearing loss, and incredible pain. The hard decision was made to remove both of her ears to let her know a pain free existence. Hollie went through the first surgery like a champ, never stopping her undying affection for everyone. She will have her second surgery shortly, and then will be ready for her home. She is social with other cats and all people. As a result of the surgery, Hollie may temporarily or permanently lose her ability to blink one or both eyes (only time will tell), so a potential home will have to be able to lubricants her eyes several times a day for her.
If you are interested in helping Hollie start her next chapter, please call 631-360-7575 for more information.

If your family is looking for an extra ray of sunshine, Princess is your girl!

Lady needs a calm and loving environment preferably as the only cat or with other independent cats.

Scooby was surrendered in January 2021 and had been in and out of foster homes since. He was lucky enough to have eventually found an amazing, patient, and understanding foster in Syracuse who has worked and trained him over the past few months. He is about 3 years old, good with other dogs, and is a big cuddle bug who loves to be by your side. Scooby would do best in a home with older children since he still loves to run and jump around.
Koley is a rare quiet husky who was just saved from the kill list at the ACC! His life completely changed when his family moved and couldn’t bring him with them. He is 4 years old and about 45 pounds. Koley is playful and friendly to both people and dogs alike. He is currently in a foster home working with a trainer on guarding and leash training. Koley would love a family that could help him continue to learn and grow. He would do best in a quiet adult-only home, and will need an experienced family that can give him plenty of exercise, structure, and guidance.
