Roosevelt native funnyman Eddie Murphy is starring opposite Jonah Hill in the new Netflix film You People, a romcom culture clash that became available for streaming on Friday.
Murphy plays Akbar Mohammed, who is skeptical of Hill as Ezra Cohen planning to propose to Mohammed’s daughter Amira, played by Lauren London. The buddy comedy crescendos with the uncomfortable dinner conversation between the lovers’ two families — the Mohammeds are Black and Muslim while the Cohens are White and Jewish.
“So you wanna marry my daughter,” Murphy’s Akbar tells Hill’s Ezra. “You can try.”
The movie was cowritten by Hill and Kenya Barris, the creator of the ABC sitcom black-ish who also directed You People. It costars Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Ezra’s mother Shelley, David Duchovny as Ezra’s father Arnold, and Nia Long as Amira’s mother Fatima. The tag line is “opposites attract, families don’t.”
The film has gotten mixed reviews with The Washington Post calling it “a master class in race relations, delivered as a comedy” while CNN’s critic wrote “You People squanders a topnotch cast in a movie caught between satire and sitcom.” It has a 43% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
