15 Pets for Adoption on Long Island
It’s officially summer, which makes it the purrfect time to adopt a new best friend. Please remember to keep your animals cool and comfortable as the heat sets in. Be sure they have fresh water readily available, a shady, cool spot away from the sun, and never leave them unattended in a vehicle as outside temperatures as low as 70 degrees can present a health hazard for our furry friends.
Available for adoption at the Town of Smithtown Animal Shelter
**Senior Alert and Special Request** Ufee is a 14-year-old Pomeranian Mix who was found abandoned in a local park. Don’t let his age fool you, he looks and acts just like a young pup! Ufee is a happy and friendly guy who enjoys spending time around people. He is an absolutely beautiful dog who is very gentle and kind. Ufee has a slightly under active thyroid and some limited hearing. He also has some halitosis, but the Animal Shelter is working on taking care of this. Ufee would do well in a home with other pets and with children over the age of ten. He is ready to share his love with a lucky family, and we know that the perfect home is out there somewhere for him.
If you are interested in meeting Ufee, please fill out an application to schedule time to properly interact with him in a domestic setting, which includes the shelter’s Meet and Greet Room, the dog runs, and Dog Walk trail. Please call the Smithtown Animal Shelter at 631-360-7575 for more information today.

Available for adoption through Tender Loving Cats
Stella is the ultimate lap cat and absolutely loves human affection. She’s vocal and loves to be involved in all of your conversations. Stella is a calm cat but enjoys her play time. She’s curious and confident and doesn’t spook easily. She’s a very patient cat and tolerates being held and picked up. Stella gets along with other cats but a slow introduction is necessary.
Stella is like a dog in the sense that she wants to eat everything she shouldn’t. She has Feline pica, which refers to when cats eat non-edible items or things with no nutritional value. This includes plastics, fabrics, rubber, plants, soil, or paper. Stella particularly wants to eat thin plastics and houseplants. A tidy household with an enclosed trash can is a must. Stella has environmental allergies to mold too. Stella so desperately wants a family who will love her as much as she loves them. Will that be you?

Available for adoption at North Shore Animal League America
When 7-year-old Delaware (Adoption #BF2527) was rescued from a frightening situation, he was the most troubled of his clowder. Fortunately for this stoic gentleman, he landed safely in the care of Animal League America’s compassionate team who asks nothing of him but to feel comfortable in the first safe place he’s ever inhabited. He’s content to spend his days gazing out the window, studying the birds from his comfy perch.
Delaware’s life has not been shared with consistent caring humans, so a very predictable home (no children) and adults with a heart for nurturing a fearful friend is what is needed to create a permanent safe space for him. He may not know it yet, but the best years are ahead once he joins a family worthy of him.
Animal League America was alerted to an emergency situation where they discovered 8-year-old Montauk (Adoption #BF2531) and several of his feline friends in need of help. They’ve given this survivor the quietest spot in which to settle after a lifetime of distress, and all the time he needs to show us who he really is. Reassessing his feelings about humans has been a struggle for Montauk at times, but each day he opens up a little more to pawsabilities of a life shared with quiet, cat-experienced humans who can offer him a consistent, predictable, and safe home. If you have a confident cat at home who would like to share their joyful pet experience with him, Montauk will be a willing student and loyal friend. A home with no children will provide him the optimal environment for his retirement years.
**Double Adoption and Senior Alert** 14-year-old Pearl (Adoption #SPC314) and her 8-year-old daughter Piper (Adoption #SPC315) faced a huge obstacle when they lost their home. With their trusted friends at North Shore Animal League America by their side, these tentative ladies have taken comfort in the quiet room they share in Bianca’s Furry Friends Feline Adoption Center. After some time to regroup, they’ve ventured out of hiding and warmly greet visitors. Both are quite motivated to share treats with new friends.
While Piper might greet you by the door, Pearl likes you to settle in and then occupy your lap. Veterinarians have created terrific treatment plans for Piper and Pearl’s hyperthyroidism (covered at cost through Animal League America’s Pet Health Centers.) A quiet, cat-experienced adult home (no children under 16) will fill them up with the love they miss, and in return, they’ll offer their gratitude for setting them on a course towards a life full of happiness.
A little birdie told us there’s something extra special about 7-month-old Birdie (Adoption #NCI3512): check out all those toes! As if this rescue from Animal League America’s sister shelter in upstate NY weren’t cute enough with her shiny black coat and attentive purrsonality, her paw taps with those giant mitts should be enough to seal the deal for her. Don’t miss out on being someone special for someone, this extraordinary polydactyl pussycat by adopting Birdie today.
The only thing 9-month-old Bandit (Adoption #NCI3533) is stealing is hearts. This tentative tuxedo abandons his trepidation when treats enter the picture. That’s all it takes to get his attention! Bandit would prefer a peaceful place to call his first home and he’s looking forward to a steady flow of love and treats coming his way.
Are you a tortie lover unwilling to settle for anyone less than purrfect? You’re in luck because 2-year-old Esti (Adoption #L80615) is the model of tortie purrfection! This stunner likes to take in her surroundings before diving in for her fair share of treats. She’ll make a lovely addition to any home. You can count yourself lucky if you’re the one who gets to share your heart with Esti.
Trust us, if you show up at Betty’s (Adoption #NCR5835) party, you’re going to win her heart. It will be the easiest thing you’ve ever done! This tiny 2-year-old momma has traded in nursery duty for door-greeting patrol. You’ll be charmed with her first hello, just like all her human and feline friends in Bianca’s Furry Friends Feline Adoption Center. Invite Betty home with you and let the good times roll with this precious little lady.
One-year-old Cool Ranch (Adoption #NCR5837) is playing it cool, but underneath his bravado he’s wondering what his fate will be. This southern rescue doesn’t want to bother anyone; he’ll just take it all in from his cubby, observing. He’ll welcome a visit from you though, especially if you come bearing treats. If you want a cool cat with a calm purrsonality, Cool Ranch would love a chance at laid back happiness with you.
Gorgeous Gwen (Adoption #NCR5840) doesn’t miss anything! This 2-year-old southern stunner watches the goings-on from the comfort of her cubby with great interest as she admires her more outgoing friends. Sit and visit her and she’ll offer you a gentle head bump and a polite acceptance of treats. If you’re looking for a peaceful friend who will happily share the couch, Gwen thinks that sounds purrfect to her!
**Double Adoption** 7-month-olds Lion (Adoption #PR00331) and his bestie Miley (Adoption #PR00332) came all the way from Puerto Rico and can’t believe their great luck! Wait until they meet you and fall in love. You’re about to exceed all of their expectations. Why choose between a super confident lion and a blissful mini house panther when you can have both? Plus, we always say when you adopt a pet, you’re saving two lives: the one you take home and the one the rescue now has room to rescue and care for. If you adopt a pair of bonded cats, you’re saving four lives.
If you’re ready to open your heart and home to any of these fabulous felines, contact DoritS@animalleague.org or visit the Port Washington campus.
As always, thanks for reading and please remember to always adopt, never shop…pass it on!
