New Hiking Trails at Hempstead Lake State Park Complete
Long Island’s hiking scene improved on Wednesday when New York State officials announced the completion of a $47 million renovation project at Hempstead Lake State Park.
A continuous North-South trail system will be available in the park as well as two pedestrian bridges with the addition of a 10-foot wide stone dust greenway trail and an eight-foot wide stone dust wetland trail. As well, there will be two new miles of accessible trails and an observation deck.
“The addition of new and better accessible trailways open up the opportunity for all New Yorkers to enjoy the gorgeous trails, lake, and wildlife that Hempstead Lake State Park offers,” Assemblymember Taylor Darling (D-Hempstead) said.
The upgrade of the 144-acre park was originally announced in 2017 with the vision to create a more accessible and climate-friendly park.
In addition to the creation of the trails – which are Disabilities Act-compliant – there were improvements made to the lake dam and the parks’ Northern Ponds as to mitigate future flood risk.
“The renewed infrastructure at Hempstead Lake State Park underscores New York’s commitment to climate resilience and demonstrates our focus to protect communities most vulnerable to the increase of extreme weather events,” Gov. Kathy Hochul said. “This multi-year project expands recreational opportunities, protects our environment and supports climate resiliency…”
The project’s final phase, approaching nearly $17 million, was said to mitigate flood risk from the Mill River and reduce pollution entering Hewlett Bay. As well, eight acres of wetlands were constructed to purify water from runoff before entering the Northeast Pond.
Town of Hempstead Deputy Supervisor Dorothy Goosby said, “Our parks are some of our greatest resources for relaxation, restoration, and connecting with our families…Hempstead Lake State Park has truly been transformed and has emerged as a beautiful location that our communities will enjoy for years to come.”
