It’s neither a presidential nor a midterm election year, but it’s still important to go to the polls on Election Day, as most of your municipal elections are being held on Nov. 7.
If you live in the Town of Hempstead, which encompasses much of southern and central Nassau County’s villages and hamlets, here’s all there is to know about your town’s November election.
Election for Town Supervisor
Candidates:
Donald X. Clavin (incumbent): The incumbent Republican Town Supervisor Donald X. Clavin is seeking a third term for re-election. He previously served as the Town’s Receiver of Taxes before unseating Laura Gillen for the town supervisor seat in 2019 in a razor-thin election. Clavin won re-election in 2021 much more comfortably, defeating Democrat Jason Abelove by a margin of about 66-34.
Olena Nicks: Olena Nicks is the Democrat running to unseat Supervisor Clavin. According to her campaign website, Nicks has experience working as a firefighter, financial analyst, and community advocate and volunteer.
Election for Town Clerk
Candidates:
Kate Murray (incumbent): Kate Murray has served as Town Clerk since 2019, a position she previously held from 2002 to 2003 before being elected Town Supervisor in 2003. Murray, the first woman to hold the position, was Town Supervisor until 2015. Kate Murray is running as a Republican.
Susan E. Cools: Susan Cools is currently the president of the Baldwin Board of Education, and is challenging Murray as a Democrat. Cools manages a real estate company in Rockville Centre.
