According to the Town of Hempstead, West Hempstead’s Capri Motor Inn has a lengthy rap sheet of prostitution, drugs, and attempted murder on its premises.

As a result, the town shut it down several weeks ago and will hold a special board meeting to address the alleged crimes.

Town of Hempstead To Review Capri Motor Inn’s Alleged Illegal Activities

The Town Board meeting will be held next week to review documented evidence of the above criminal activity, as well as numerous public safety violations cited at the facility.

The town will move to declare the Capri Motor Inn a “public nuisance.”

“The Capri Motor Inn has been a breeding ground for criminal activity, putting the safety of residents and neighboring business owners at risk,” Town Supervisor Donald X. Clavin said. “I am proud to join with my colleagues on the Town Board, Nassau County Legislators Bill Gaylor and John Giuffre, and local community leaders to push for the permanent closure of this facility to ensure the safety and quality of life of the West Hempstead community.”

The Town of Hempstead has recently taken action against businesses that, according to a news release, “do not uphold the municipal standard for public health and safety.”

Recently, the town closed the Coliseum Motor Inn, citing issues ranging from structural damage to mold to criminal activity.

The town has also spearheaded local legislation to prevent vape shops from operating near schools and residential communities.

Another West Hempstead facility – the Courtesy Hotel – was shut down years ago and replaced with apartment housing.

“The closing of the Capri Motor Inn is a victory for the West Hempstead community,” Town Councilman Thomas Muscarella said. “I salute all the residents and business owners who have supported the Town of Hempstead in getting the job done.”

Nassau County Legislators Help Town of Hempstead With Effort

Nassau County Legislators Bill Gaylor and John Giuffré, who recently called for more traffic safety on West Hempstead’s Woodfield Road, assisted the town with the effort to close the inn down.

“As a member of the Nassau Legislature’s Health and Social Services Committee, I am pleased that the Town of Hempstead – along with the Nassau fire marshal and police – have successfully closed down the Capri Motor Inn,” Legislator Gaylor said. “I commend Supervisor Don Clavin and the Hempstead Town Board for their leadership on this issue.”

Recently, the town has undertaken a “quality of life” initiative, which has mostly consisted of cleaning up debris and graffiti at town parks. But according to Supervisor Clavin, the initiative applies to the Capri Motor Inn as well.

“For years, the Capri Motel has been a bane on West Hempstead’s community,” Legislator Giuffré said. “Residents and community members have been loud and clear that they do not want this crime-infested business in West Hempstead. I thank Supervisor Clavin and the town board for their work in shutting the motel down, and I stand with the community on wanting to make it permanent.”
