Whether you’re adopting a new pet or are already a proud owner, keeping them from becoming overweight is crucial for their overall health and well-being.
Just like in humans, excess weight in pets can lead to a range of health issues, including diabetes, heart disease, joint problems, and a shortened lifespan. In honor of National Pet Obesity Day on October 11th, remember to provide your pets with a balanced diet and regular exercise to ensure their furry companions lead long, healthy, and fulfilling lives.
And now for this week’s adorable lineup available for adoption…
Available for adoption through Tender Loving Cats
Lara is an independent kitten who enjoys playing with her littermates and other cats, playing with wand toys, laser toys, balls, and springs too! Lara can take a little bit to get to know you, but then she purrs, rubs up and butts heads as soon as she sees you.
Maureen is a sweet and mellow kitten that purrs as soon as you walk into the room. She would do well with someone who would love to snuggle and hold her all day. Maureen is playful with other cats but enjoys just being held. She’s extremely cooperative and easygoing!
Look at this handsome guy! Finch likes to be held and will purr when you pet him while he is in his cat bed or on the bed in the foster room. Finch loves to play and will run around with his sisters Wren and Sparrow. He enjoys a good wand toy, laser toy and springs too.

You know that idealized image of a dog sitting peacefully by your side, her face looking up towards yours, her chin resting on your leg as you gently pet her, her eyes blinking blissfully in the afternoon sun? Well, that is Clover in a nutshell! She is an absolute sweetheart, enjoying every minute she gets to be by your side (squeaky toys, anyone?). But once you go to work, she’s happy to curl up, take a nice long nap until you get home—and then greet you with the joy of 1000 suns when you walk through the door. Get ready to be loved!
Lennox was saved from the brink of euthanasia this year, and her transformation has been nothing short of inspiring. In her foster home, Lennox has blossomed into a joyful and spirited petite girl. She’s a bundle of fun who finds delight in playing fetch and snuggling up on the couch for belly rubs. Lennox is a star on walks and has mastered her basic commands. She warms up slowly and appreciates a home where she can decompress at her own pace. Given her sensitivity, it’s recommended that she’s adopted into a household without kids or cats.
Simon was rescued a few weeks ago with 2 other kittens. He is the shyest of the 3 but loves to cuddle and play with his other friends. Once he is comfortable, you can find him lying around or sleeping like a bug in a rug. If your home has a comfy little spot for this guy, why not open your heart and home to Simon today?!
Shiva was rescued a few weeks along with two other kittens. She is shy at first but once she is comfortable in her new surroundings, she loves to run around and play with her toys. She’s definitely a cuddle bug and would do great either alone or with another feline friend.

Available for adoption at the Smithtown Animal Shelter
Sweet Tea is a delightful one year-old Pit Mix who arrived at the Animal Shelter after being found wandering around busy roads and trying to get into passing cars. Her time as a stray left her a little underweight, and there were some signs that she had a recent litter. After initially being somewhat unsure of herself in her new surroundings, she has shown us how friendly and loving she can be! Sweet Tea is a small ball of energy and an absolute pleasure to be around. She enjoys meeting anyone who will give her some attention, and she responds positively to training. Sweet Tea would do well in a home with older children, and she’ll likely get along with most other dogs that can tolerate her social behavior.
