The New York State Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation (OSI) is investigating the case of a Suffolk County police officer fatally shooting a man wielding what appeared to be two swords in Elwood this week.
Two officers responded to a 911 call of a violent man at a home on Mander Lane and upon arrival, officers found Alan Weber screaming, breaking items in his house and refusing to come outside at 8:44 p.m. Tuesday, police said.
When the officers entered the home, authorities said the 54-year-old man confronted them with the swords. One officer used a taser to try to subdue Weber, but when police said he continued to advance toward the officers, the other officer shot Weber.
Weber was taken to Huntington Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Officers recovered a pair of fencing swords at the scene, police said.
Homicide Squad detectives are continuing the investigation in addition to the OSI probe, which is mandated by state law whenever a civilian is killed in a police shooting. The names of the officers involved have not been released.
