Aftermath Of The Storm: Where Long Island Got Hit Hardest
Tuesday’s storm brought up to three inches of rain and winds of up to 60 miles per hour. Some areas of Long Island were hit harder than others.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), Southold saw the most rainfall in Suffolk County, with 3.44 inches recorded, while North Massapequa saw the most rainfall in Nassau with 2.82 inches recorded. Both Southold and North Massapequa appear to be middle-of-the-pack compared to the rest of the tristate area; Ridgefield, Connecticut saw the most rainfall with 4.77 inches recorded.
In terms of the wind, Shirley Airport got the strongest winds in Suffolk, with gusts of up to 63 miles per hour recorded. In Nassau, Oyster Bay saw wind gusts of up to 53 miles per hour. Shirley Airport saw the second-strongest winds in the tristate area during this storm; the only place that topped it was Larchmont Harbor, which had gusts of up to 64 miles per hour.
PSEG put out a statement saying thousands were without power, but that they expected to fully restore power to the whole island by the end of Wednesday.
“As of 4:20 PM, PSEG Long Island has restored power to more than 26,100 customers since 4 PM Tuesday,” the company said in a statement. “PSEG Long Island is reporting 1,273 of its approximately 1.2 million customers are currently without service.”
The Town of East Hampton put out a statement saying several roads were closed and cautioned residents against going to the beaches due to the surge. They also cautioned drivers against driving through flooded areas.
The Town of Riverhead announced the closure of Reeves Beach in Baiting Hollow until further notice.
A state of emergency was declared for both Nassau and Suffolk counties on Tuesday, and Gov. Kathy Hochul put out an additional warning. While the rain has ended, heavy winds are still hitting Long Island, and a coastal flood warning will remain in effect until at least 11 p.m. Wednesday.
