A Smithtown man whose police brutality case ended the careers of a police chief, district attorney and top corruption investigator was arrested for allegedly breaking an 89-year-old woman’s leg, Suffolk County prosecutors said.
A grand jury indicted Christopher Loeb on felony charges of assault and criminal mischief. Judge Steven Pilewski set bail for the 37-year-old man at $75,000 cash, $150,000 bond, or $750,000 partially secured bond.
“Violence against anyone should never be tolerated, but it is especially reprehensible when that
violence is directed against an elderly woman in their own home,” said Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney.
Prosecutors said pushed the victim to the ground and threw a metal plant stand at her, fracturing her femur on Jan. 12. The victim called 911 and officers took Loeb into custody on the second floor of the home. The victim was taken to St. Catherine of Siena Hospital in Smithtown for treatment and remains in rehabilitative care.
Loeb made news after former Suffolk County Police Chief James Burke pleaded guilty in Central Islip federal court to beating Loeb while Loeb was handcuffed in a police station being questioned for stealing a bag of sex toys and porn from Burke’s vehicle. Former Suffolk County District Attorney Tom Spota and Spota’s top deputy Christopher McPartland were convicted of trying to cover up the beating.
McPartland and Burke have since been released from prison, but Spota is still serving his sentence. Burke was recently arrested for allegedly soliciting a male undercover officer for sex at a war memorial.
Suffolk paid Loeb $1.5 million to settle a police brutality lawsuit after the criminal trial concluded. Loeb has since had several run-ins with the law. He is due back in court on Feb. 15.
