Celebrating the Lunar New Year, the Charles B. Wang Center at Stony Brook University held a performance featuring the Yana Ballet Dance Group and local Chinese performing artists. Dance took over the stage with the same grace as fluttering butterflies take over the sky.
The Lunar New Year is the most important holiday in China, being celebrated not only in the country but also anywhere else in the world with a significant Chinese population. This 15-day celebration marks the arrival of spring and the beginning of the new year in the lunisolar calendar. Following the Chinese zodiac, 2024 is the year of the dragon.
The Wang Center theater welcomed a large crowd, ranging from Chinese families who wanted to celebrate the year of the dragon to other members of the local community who were looking for an enchanting cultural experience.
Rafael Cruvinel, a journalism major student at Stony Brook University who was captivated by the spectacle of dance and music blending artistry with tradition, remarked, “It’s wonderful that the Stony Brook community and campus students have the opportunity to witness a mesmerizing celebration of Chinese culture.”
