She’s Sugar, spice and everything nice! Sugar is a delightfully sweet, and petite, chocolate-colored Min-Pin (Miniature Pinscher and Boston Terrier) Mix.  This six year old girl’s journey began under some very unfortunate circumstances, originally rescued by the Shelter from a terrible breeding situation where she was used, neglected, and discarded. After medical care for being malnourished and dehydrated, this tiny survivor was later adopted… only to be returned to the shelter two years later due to her fears when it comes to meeting new people. This poor girl has been failed by humans her entire life… and now it’s time for her to find her furr-ever EVER happy ending!

As a result of all Sugar has endured, it takes her some time and understanding to warm up to people. The key to earning Sugar’s trust is simple; a little compassion, patience and understanding. Sugar appreciates receiving doggy treats, which helps her to learn that there are good humans out there who are loving and want to care for her. This Sugar-Pie is highly intelligent and loves to learn. She is also energetic and eager to please.

Sugar can become protective of her people; however, she will listen when corrected. Sugar would be best suited in a quiet home with no other pets or children. Let’s get her story out to the world far and wide… if you’re not the right person for Sugar, you can still help by sharing her story on social media and with friends, neighbors and family.

If you are interested in meeting Sugar please fill out an application  and schedule a date/time to properly interact in a domestic setting, which includes our Meet and Greet Room, the dog runs, and our Dog Walk trail. *Special Request* Poppy is a 1.5-year-old Cane Corso, who came into the shelter as a stray wearing a worn collar, and unfortunately, no one ever came to reclaim her. Poppy has the cutest way of greeting people, and smiles when she’s excited to see you! This big girl loves being in the play yard, playing fetch with squeaky toys. Poppy weighs about 94 pounds, a true gentle giant. Shelter life has not been easy for Poppy. She needs a foster or adopter as soon as possible as she is showing signs of kennel stress with weight loss. The shelter moved her to a quieter area to help ease her stress and monitor her, but she’s not eating as she should be. Poppy needs a home to call her own so that she can blossom into the confident, wonderful dog she should be.  At this time, she is recommended for a home with young teens, 13 and up due to her size.

Adoption Lea

*Special Request* Meet Lea! This little lady needs a special foster or adopter as she is almost completely blind. She came from a Trap Neuter Release, but her sweetness and special needs meant she could not go back outside. She is very loveable. Lea sees mostly shadows and would thrive in a home environment. At just about 2 years old, she has a lot of love and purrs to give to that special person who will help her navigate the world.

If you are interested in getting more information on Poppy or Lea, contact the shelter’s placement team at Adoption@hempsteadny.gov or call 516.785.5220.

Adoption Peony

Life had been trying for five-year-old Peony, but Animal League America’s commitment to restoring her faith in people has been paying off. This lonely blossom needs a home committed to showing her love and patience on her terms. A little compassion goes a long way in nurturing trust along with a family with older children and cat-experienced adults. This’ll give her the space she needs to feel safe once again, and as the only pet in the home, she’ll flourish!
