The Port Washington Farmers’ Market, a local project managed by Port Washington non-profit Grassroots Environmental Education, will open for its 22nd season on Saturday, June 8. The market will take place from 8 a.m. until 12 noon on the Town Dock every Saturday morning through the end of October.
This year the market will welcome back Demetra’s Organic Farm, Catch of the Hamptons Fish, Johnny Breads and Diesel Cold Brew, along with many other specialty food purveyors that shoppers have come to count on. There will also be some new vendors, including empanadas from Jessy’s Pastries and all-natural soap from Clean Essence.
The Port Washington Farmers’ Market is one of the few places where food can be purchased without polystyrene trays and plastic wrap. Most vendors at the market use biodegradable bags instead of single-use plastic bags which harm the environment and have now become a worldwide human health concern.
With the original idea to give the community access to local, seasonal, organic food and to make that available to all residents, the market participates in the NYS Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (FMNP). This provides assistance for the WIC (Women, Infants and Children’s Program) and a supplemental food program for seniors.
