“Kickin’ it old school” was the theme for this year’s field day at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District.
Under sunny skies, students participated in the traditional activities that their parents likely enjoyed in their elementary days.
Events included potato sack, relay and three-legged races, tug-of-war, egg on a spoon, and rock, paper, scissors. Students looking to cool down a little definitely liked the sponge race, in which they passed a wet sponge down the line to fill up a bucket.
There was also a DJ dance party and an Italian ice truck.
In the auditorium, students competed in the Brain Challenge, which included a mix of academic questions and physical events. They earned points for correct answers as they were quizzed in subject areas. A team could also boost their score with success in elimination challenges like a hula-hoop contest.
Earlier in the week, students tie-dyed their “Peace, Love, Field Day” T-shirts, way to build a stronger connection to the event. The shirts were colored blue, green, red, or orange to represent their field day teams, and many students matched their shorts, socks, and headbands, colored their hair, and painted their faces to show even more pride.
Field day was organized by physical education teachers Heather Poetsch and Amanda DelGiacco, along with math specialist Dom Genovese. “We’re keeping things simple and fun,” Ms. Poetsch said, noting that all of the events had easy instructions. “You just need a pair of sneakers and you’re ready to go.”
