Schneps Media and Anton Media Group are pleased to announce its staff members received five Press Club of Long Island’s (PCLI) Annual Media Competition Awards, including one PCLI special award, the Bob Greene Public Service Award for most impactful column on Long Island in 2023.
“Congratulations to all who were a part of the contest submissions and to the winners—you are an amazing group and inspire all of us,” publisher of Anton Media Group Angela Susan Anton said.
The awards were announced at a dinner and ceremony at Fox Hollow Country Club on Thursday, June 13, an annual event attended by local print, television, radio and student journalists and art designers.

Bob Greene Public Service Award
Managing Editor Christy Hinko for “Long Island Veterans Bulletin,” nominated by the Museum of American Armor Museum in Old Bethpage for a column on Long Island that is making an impact in 2023.
The museum’s nomination letter to the Press Club of Long Island read:
There are quiet heroes that walk among us.
They are the tens of thousands of Long Islanders who, during their youth, donned the uniform of our nation’s armed forces and defended our nation through their service.
We may see them once a year at a Memorial Day parade or spot them putting out the flag on a national holiday but, by and large, they are invisible to most Long Islanders.
But not to Christy Hinko.
A veteran herself, she has used the power of the press to call our attention to the men and women whose devotion, courage, and sacrifice have ensured the future of our nation. Her prose, insight, and personal anecdotes compel the reader to recognize the enormous responsibilities we place on those on active duty. Her column lifts our recognition of military veterans from some remote topic of little importance to a far more personal appreciation of their role in our lives.
In a bi-county region that remains home to one of the largest veterans’ populations in the United States not only engages that audience but their neighbors, friends, family, and those who will now pause and consider the person passing by with a veterans overseas cap.
The Museum of American Armor inside Old Bethpage Village Restoration opened its doors with a singular mission to honor all American veterans. By doing so, we are merely following the path pioneered by Ms. Hinko. We respectfully believe her work is worthy of recognition by the Long Island Press Club and submit this letter in support of her entry.
Robert W. Greene (1929-2008) became a visiting professor of journalism at Stony Brook University in 2006 after retiring as chairman of the department of journalism and mass media studies at Hofstra University. Greene won the nation’s highest journalism awards and helped shape and define investigative journalism in America for 40 years. Greene founded the nation’s first permanent newspaper investigative team at Newsday in 1967 and led the team in 1970 and 1974 to Pulitzer Prize gold medals for public service. He retired from his post as assistant managing editor of Newsday in 1992 after 38 years with the newspaper. He was also a media consultant, educator, author, lecturer and frequent TV panelist.
He taught from 1995-2003 at Hofstra University, where he was The Stessin Distinguished Professor of Journalism (established in 1998 through the generosity of the estate of Lawrence Stessin, a longtime journalist at The New York Times) and chairman of the department of journalism and mass media studies. He was named the school’s Teacher of the Year in 1998 and was chosen in 2000 by the entire Hofstra University graduating class as Millennium Teacher of The Year. He was awarded the Hofstra President’s Medal in 2002. Prior to his stint at Hofstra, Greene was an adjunct instructor of journalism at Stony Brook for 10 years and coordinator of the university’s journalism minor program.
A fellow of the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ), Greene also held—individually or as Newsday team leader—the University of Missouri Medal for Distinguished Service to American Journalism Education, three national public-service awards from the Society of Professional Journalists, two National Headliner Awards, two Front Page Awards and two Deadline Club awards. Among his many other awards are the Amos Tuck Award for Economic Reporting from Dartmouth University, the George Polk Award for suburban reporting from Long Island University, and the Peter Zenger Freedom of Information Award from the University of Arizona. He was an honorary alumnus of both the University of Maryland and Hofstra University.
