Friday, July 12

Listening to Nature: A Bamboo Music Workshop

10:30 a.m. (Great Neck Social Center, 80 Grace Ave.) The Great Neck Social Center is offering a bamboo instruments workshop for seniors. People will have a chance to try different instruments that are made of bamboo and learn the technique and culture behind them. Wang Wei, a member of the Chinese Musicians Association and the founder of the Beiiing Bamboo Orchestra and New York Bamboo Music Association, will be presenting the workshop.

Saturday, July 13

Summer Concert Series: MO5AIC

8:00 - 9:30 p.m. (Steppingstone Park, 38 Steppingstone Ln.) This is a five-man vocal band with an innovative vocal collaboration, combining elements of funk, pop, rock, jazz, R&B, and even opera, to create a musical experience produced entirely by the human voice. This concert is part of the 2024 Summer Concert Series presented by Great Neck Park District. Free admission is available for all Great Neck Park District residents with a valid Park Card. 

Great Neck Library Art Exhibit Reception: Paintings by Jonathan Van Brunt

3:00 – 5:00 p.m. (Main Library Lower-Level Art Gallery, 159 Bayview Avenue) Great Neck Library is having an Art Exhibit for Paintings by Jonathan Van Brunt from July 8 to July 26. Great Neck Library welcomes you to come join them for a reception with the artist. Bakithi Kumalo’s Graceland Experience

7:00 – 8:30 p.m. (Steppingstone Park, 38 Steppingstone Lane) Introduced to Paul Simon during recording sessions for the Graceland album in 1985, Kumalo traveled with Simon to New York to finish the record. Touring regularly with Simon throughout his career, Kumalo has recorded with and performed alongside artists including Joan Baez, Cyndi Lauper, Herbie Hancock, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Grover Washington Jr., Mickey Hart, and Disney’s The Lion King. This concert is part of the 2024 Summer Concert Series presented by Great Neck Park District. Free admission is available for all Great Neck Park District residents with a valid Park Card.

An Evening with Mindy Alpert, former Olympic Torchbearer 

6:30 p.m. (Great Neck Library) Nominated by friends as an inspiration, Mindy Alpert was an Olympic Torchbearer for the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics – an honor that Mindy says is one of the greatest highlights of her life. Come hear her story, learn about the ceremony, and ask questions. No registration is required. Open to teens and adults. First come first seated. 1:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. (Great Neck Library) Appointments are preferred; however, walk-ins will be welcome if space permits. Please remember to eat, drink, and bring your ID with your name and photo. You will receive a pair of NY Mets tickets when you show up to donate while supplies last. Scavenger Hunts

A number of scavenger hunts are taking place in the Great Neck libraries. In the Main Library, the scavenger hunt for the month of July will be all about birdwatching. This program will be all month long at the Main Building and no registration required. At the Parkville location, go on a summertime-themed scavenger hunt in the Parkville Branch Children’s room through the month of July. Participants will receive a prize while supplies last.
