The Syosset Public Library hosted events in June for patrons of all ages to enjoy. The children’s, teen and adult programs will continue to run throughout the summer.
On June 10, the library hosted its Summer Reading program Kickoff event. It was held in the Children’s Room, but it was available to all ages. The summer reading theme this year is “Adventure at your Library,” and in-person registrators received an additional prize with their attendance. Summer reading will continue through August, and the library encourages patrons to attend events and participate in the program.
On June 21, the library hosted an adult cooking class. Barbeque Pitmaster Brian Collins taught attendees about American Southern BBQ. He explained the roots of the American cuisine and taught patrons about the history of the American South. These dishes became popular at a time when many Southern farmers were poor, and because they sold their best cuts of meat, they had to find ways to make the cheaper cuts tender and tasty. The “low and slow” style of cooking became popularized, and Collins taught attendees how to get that same effect on your own barbeque grill.
On June 23, the library hosted an in-person musical performance with the talented and award-winning musician Dongfeng Liu Duo. Dongfeng Liu Duo fused cultural music by performing Latin Jazz fusion with traditional Chinese music. With influences from China, American jazz and Caribbean rhythms, attendees got to enjoy a wide variety of genres at this event. Dongfeng Liu is an award winning jazz pianist, composer and arranger.
On June 26, Madhumita Sen taught an adult painting class. The class, “Firefly Ballet on a Summer Night,” inspired patrons with the beautiful nature around them. The library regularly hosts adult arts and crafts programs for those interested.
On June 28, the Children’s Room hosted a cooking class for children in fourth and fifth grade. Students learned how to make cake pops from scratch. Once they learned about the process from start to finish, attendees got to decorate and enjoy their own cake pops with icing, sprinkles and other candies.
In June, the library will continue to host a wide variety of programs. Many of its events require registration beforehand, which can be done on the library website. For more information on any upcoming events, please visit www.syossetlibrary.org or call (516) 921-7161.
