New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced a New York State investment of nearly $51 million for public safety on Long Island. These investments are intended to help local agencies fight crime and keep residents safe.
This funding is intended to combat organized retail theft, hate crimes, gun violence and domestic abuse.
Agencies in Nassau County received $1,494,692 for the GIVE funding cycle. This cycle runs from July 1, 2024, through June 30, 2025.
With increased funding, the Old Westbury, Brookeville and Muttontown police departments will have additional funds to upgrade its technology and equipment.
According to a press release provided by Nassau County Legislature: “This funding also includes approximately $21.1 million in one-time capital funding to 39 police departments and sheriffs’ offices – including millions for the Nassau County Police and Sheriff Departments, $704,000 for the Old Westbury Police Department, $147,716 for the Muttontown Police Department and $95,100 for the Brookville Police Department to purchase law enforcement technology and equipment to allow those agencies more effectively solve, reduce and prevent crime.”
The budget also allocates $40 million to support domestic violence survivors, as well as expands offences that are eligible for prosecution as hate crimes. These measures will ensure safety and support for local residents.
Following the announcement, Nassau County Legislature Deputy Minority Leader Arnold W. Drucker (D – Plainview) issued the following statement:
“This significant allocation of supplemental resources for the Nassau County Police Department, the Nassau County Sheriff’s Department and our local village police agencies will empower the men and women of law enforcement to further elevate their service to the communities they have taken an oath to serve and protect.”
He continued: “I thank Governor Hochul for continuing to prioritize public safety and continuing to support Nassau’s first responders in their work to keep this the safest county of its size in the United States.”
