The Firefighters Association of the State of New York has awarded Phillip LoNigro of the Farmingdale Fire Department the Youth Mentor of the Year Award for 2024.

“This recognition highlights his exceptional commitment to mentoring young firefighters and his profound impact on both the future firefighters and the broader fire service community,” said FASNY.

On its website, the state association praised LoNigro for organizing standby nights, facilitating participation in the Nassau County Junior Firefighters Association’s annual fire camp, and ensuring firsthand learning experiences by accompanying juniors on fire department calls.

“What distinguishes LoNigro is his compassionate demeanor and genuine care for his mentees,” the website states. “He prioritizes their well-being, emphasizing values such as “family first,” and provides steadfast support through challenging times. His mentorship extends beyond technical skills, fostering confidence and resilience in those he guides. As an active EMT-CC and firefighter, LoNigro leads by example, embodying the principles he teaches. He treats his mentees like family, always available to address their concerns and guide them through stressful situations.”

LoNigro is a member of the Nassau County Juniors Fire Fighters Association, an emergency medical care technician, a fire department commissioner and the junior advisor and chairman for fire department affairs.

“LoNigro’s influence is not confined to technical skills; he imparts invaluable life lessons and instills confidence in his mentees. Under his guidance, they evolve into resilient individuals who are ready to tackle any challenge that comes their way,” FASNY added.

Farmingdale Mayor Ralph Ekstrand congratulated LoNigro.

“On behalf of the board of trustees and myself, thank you for your tremendous leadership, mentoring, lifesaving, volunteer, and community efforts. Congratulations, Phil, on receiving the FASNY 2024 Mentor of the Year Award!” Ekstrand said.
