When Don Clavin said that the result of his 12.1% tax increase ($42 million) would only be $5.00 for village residents and only $65.00 for non-village residents, he was lying.
Clavin, having been the Town’s Receiver of Taxes for nearly 20 years knows that taxes are based on assessed values.
If what he said was true, then a $1 million home would pay the same amount as a $600k home, and everyone knows this is not true.
Also, there are about about 231,808 parcels of land in Hempstead Town. If all of them were assessed the same and their were no villages or other differences, then each property would incur ~$181 tax increase to collect Clavin’s $42 million tax increase ($42 mil/231,808).
\But since there are exemptions like village residents, seniors, veterans, etc how this $42 million increase will be collected will vary from property to property depending on which exemptions your property is entitled to. Also, if you own a business or multifamily dwelling your tax level will also be different.
The bottom line is Clavin’s claim that all property owners will only see a $5.00 increase if they live in a village and $65 if they don’t is just a self serving statement.
In 2019 Clavin criticized then Supervisor Gillen’s $2 million tax increase (.74%) in his campaign. In 2025, Clavin voted to increase taxes 21 times more than Gillen’s proposal.
