The Port Washington Public Library is hosting a screening and discussion of the documentary film, Driving the Green Book, based on the podcast and subsequent book by award-winning broadcaster and author Alvin Hall on Wednesday, Nov. 13, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Lapham Meeting Room.
From 1936 to 1967, millions of Black travelers relied on The Negro Motorist Green Book, the definitive guide to businesses where they could safely rest, eat, or sleep. Driving the Green Book has been described as a vital work of national history and a hopeful chronicle of Black resilience and resistance.
The documentary explores the recent journey that Alvin Hall and some of his students took on a road trip across Long Island, looking for locations once listed in the Green Book. Filmmaker Saro Varjabedian will join Alvin Hall to discuss the film’s making and take audience questions. Books will be available for purchase and signing.
