During the Village of Great Neck Board of Trustees meeting Tuesday, a couple of residents shared their concerns on recent mice sightings on their properties.

The board discussed some possibilities as to why this is happening, but residents expressed their continued unsettledness.

“I’ve noticed over the past couple of months there have been mice running around in the yard,” said one Great Neck resident. “The problem has gotten worse, so I’ve tried setting up traps and cleaning up everything I can. I’ve asked some of my neighbors and they see a similar issue.”

Board members suggested that the presence of mice could be due to the dryness caused by the lack of rain that Long Island has seen over the last month.

“Wood piles on the ground are natural habitats for mice,” said Trustee Steven Hope.

With dry wood piles and/or leaf piles accumulating and the possibility that some homeowners are mismanaging their yards, he said this could be an issue.

“If we zoom back 10 years ago, we had people coming to us and saying, ‘We have this terrible cat problem, there are cats all over the village.’ We didn’t have a mice problem at the time,” Hope said. “If you get rid of the cats, you’re going to get the mice.”

The board suggested residents call the New York State Board of Health for any concerns or issues related to the mice or problems
that fall under the Board of Health. The Nassau County Board of Health can be reached at (516) 227-9697.
