North Hempstead residents are invited to take part in the return of the “Freezin’ for a Reason” Polar Plunge, set for Saturday, Feb. 8 at North Hempstead Beach Park.
The event, which benefits Special Olympics New York, will feature hundreds of local participants braving the chilly waters of Hempstead Harbor to raise funds for athletes with intellectual disabilities.
Special Olympics New York offers year-round sports training and competition at no cost to children and adults with intellectual disabilities. The organization’s programs aim to improve physical fitness, boost courage, foster joy, and create opportunities for athletes to form lasting friendships with their families and communities.
On the day of the plunge, on-site registration will begin at 9 a.m., followed by opening ceremonies at 10 a.m. Participants can sign up individually or as teams, and there is no minimum fundraising requirement to join in. While plunging into the cold waters is the event’s main draw, organizers encourage spectators to show their support from the shore.
“I’ve been plunging for four years, so if you’ve got a heart of gold and nerves of steel, come on down and plunge with me!” said North Hempstead Town Supervisor Jennifer DeSena. “If jumping in isn’t your thing, you’re still welcome to cheer on your neighbors and help raise funds for this fantastic cause.”
Students are welcome to participate, but those under 18 must have written consent from a parent or guardian. Community service hours will be available for students who take part. North Hempstead Beach Park is located at 175 West Shore Road, Port Washington.
