Mike Kondyra left 2024 with his career high in scoring for MacArthur High School at 42 points – a total he set in the team’s final game of the year against Division High School.

The senior then scored 43 points to kick off 2025 against Island Trees on Jan. 4.

Kondyra has spent his entire life in Levittown and is now a senior at MacArthur. He began playing basketball at a young age – gaining interest in the sport from his father who spent time with Towson University’s basketball program. Kondyra also played baseball growing up but made the decision at 12 to focus solely on basketball.

Kondyra is now the third-leading scorer in Nassau County for a MacArthur team with playoff aspirations. He is averaging 27.1 points per game through the first 11 games of the season.

“The plays that have been run for me have created a lot of open space, and it allows me to get buckets,” Kondyra said.

Two years ago, Kondyra was the only sophomore to make the varsity team. MacArthur varsity coach Brian Maini said he knew early on that the forward was going to be a key contributor to the team.

“As a freshman, we knew he could score, we knew he could shoot, but we wanted to see him kind of expand his game,” Maini said. “Every team can use a shooter like him.”

Kondyra played in a complementary role as a sophomore before stepping into the spotlight as a junior. The forward was eighth in Nassau County with 19 points per game.

“He became a real athlete,” Maini said about Knodyra’s jump from sophomore to junior year. “He grew into his body, and he was tough to keep up with.”

Kondyra started his senior year off with a 19-point performance in a three-point loss to Bethpage High School. MacArthur started the season 2-3 before Kondyra set a season-high with 32 points in a win against Carey High School. He matched that total in the school’s next game before then setting career highs in back-to-back games.

“We know that with league play picking up he’s going to see everybody’s best defender and double teams,” Maini said. “We’ll have to get a little more creative moving forward.”

MacArthur plays its last regular season game on Feb. 10.

Kondyra hasn’t decided on whether he wants to continue playing basketball in college, but his senior year stat line is likely to earn him recognition down the line.
