The Long Island Coalition Against Bullying led workshops at James H. Vernon School, which focused on fostering respect and unity in schools. The school’s third- and fourth-graders attended an assembly with the coalition, while the fifth- and sixth-graders had smaller classroom discussions.

Some of the topics covered were: respecting others, appropriate and inappropriate conversation topics, boundaries, online behavior, empathy and leadership.

The workshops were attended by students, staff and school administrators, including principals and the district’s supervisor of guidance, Joy-Anne D’Anca. The coalition offered a separate session for parents on Jan. 13.

The district said students were engaged in conversation and showcased thoughtfulness during the presentations.
