Herricks students use creativity, cooperation to conquer STEM challenge

4-Center-Street-DeSTEMber-Challenge

Before the holiday break, students at Herricks’ Center Street Elementary School took part in the 10th Annual DeSTEMber Challenge, an event that encourages the creative use of the four elements of STEM: Science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

DeSTEMber was created by Center Street teachers Ms. Brillon and Ms. Leicht, who wanted to inspire collaboration across grade levels through a fun STEM activity, with parents also invited to work alongside their children.

This year’s challenge was to build a model ski lift and ramp using the provided materials and test the model with a marble. All DeSTEMber challenges incorporated the engineering design process and the six competencies of the Herricks Portrait of a Graduate: collaboration, communication, confidence, compassion, creative innovation and critical thinking.
