New Hyde Park-Garden City Park Union Free School District’s afterschool Lego Clubs are exploring the layers of the ocean and practicing building and coding skills as they participate in the FIRST Lego League Explore SUBMERGED challenge.
FIRST Lego League is an international educational initiative.
Eleven groups across all four school buildings, comprised of approximately 130 third and fourth graders, meet weekly to work on their Lego designs. Using Lego bricks and Lego Education software, each group is tasked with creating an under-the-sea scene.
Their projects include an autonomous underwater vehicle, coral reef, shark, sunken treasure, and diver. The students must code a submarine to flash a light and propel forward and backward.
The Lego Clubs will display their work at the districtwide Lego Expo on May 12.
