Garden City Park School students are learning design tips, exploring STEM and testing out coding during the New Hyde Park-Garden City Park Union Free School District’s after-school SCOPE Explorations Program.

The district offers this after-school program throughout the school year at all four buildings. The three courses offered at Garden City Park for the winter session include Books and Bots for grades K-2, Canva and Creations Digital Design for grades 3-5 and Coding: Gaming and Animation for grades 3-6.

In the Canva course, students learn the basics of the online graphic design tool and create their own posters, invitations, advertisements and social media posts.

Books and Bots introduces young students to STEM and coding. Each week, the students listen to a STEM-themed read-aloud and experiment with simple robotics and other hands-on activities.

The students enrolled in the Coding: Gaming and Animation course are learning how to effectively design an online game while strengthening their problem-solving and team-building skills. The group utilized Code.org for their prompts and activities, such as coding a game to a client’s need in an imagined scenario.
