On Feb. 14, Herricks students from throughout the district came together to celebrate “P.S. I Love You Day.” This nationally recognized event aims to inspire hope in those affected by mental illness by creating a supportive environment where everyone feels welcome, loved and valued.
At Herricks High School, students wore purple, made friendship bracelets and wrote encouraging messages on hearts that are displayed around the school. A table by the cafeteria manned by students provided mental health resources and raised money for suicide prevention causes.
Herricks Middle School students adorned the school hallways with Post-It notes and purple displays that offered messages of affirmation, love and acceptance.
Students and teachers posted over 1,100 messages throughout the school. Additionally, the message behind “P.S. I Love You Day” was discussed in classes, giving students an opportunity to talk about feelings, challenges, and hopes for the future.
Students worked with school social workers at each Herricks elementary school to create murals based on this year’s “P.S. I Love You Day” theme: A brighter tomorrow begins today. The colorful creations were filled with messages of positivity and encouragement and fun illustrations to brighten the day for anyone who needs a lift.
