Since its founding in 2004, Miller & Caggiano, LLP has maintained focus on its mission of assisting injured and disabled workers.
The firm’s 14 attorneys and 52 staffers, who are located in Bohemia, Carle Place, and Manhattan, assist clients throughout New York State, aiding both union and community members alike with their legal issues. Miller & Caggiano, LLP, specializes in New York State Workers’ Compensation, Social Security Administration, Personal Injury, and New York State and Local Retirement System law.
Fighting for the Worker
Personal experience pointed the firm’s founders, Todd Miller and Greg Caggiano, in the direction of defending the rights of injured workers and their respective families. For Miller, the influence came from his parents, who were both schoolteachers and vocal union advocates. And for Caggiano, firm’s managing partner, the influence came from his family, who “were all part of the Local 28 Sheet Metal Workers Union.” Even Caggiano’s wife is a member of the Suffolk AME (Association of Municipal Employees).
Prior to becoming an attorney, Caggiano worked the better part of a decade as a union splicer for New York Telephone, later referred to as Verizon.
“I was a member of the Communication Workers of America (CWA), where I was a shop steward with the union,” Caggiono stated. “During my tenure there, we were involved in three strikes.”
While a member of CWA Local 1104, Caggiano attended night classes at Touro Law School, where he graduated in 2000. It was this experience that led Caggiano to work tirelessly in representing workers and their rights against the companies or municipalities that employ them.
The work performed by Miller & Caggiano, LLP, is not just personal to the firm’s founders, it is crucial to injured workers throughout New York State.
“It is important because once you get hurt at work and you are out of work for a prolonged period of time, you may lose your tenure, seniority and medical benefits,” he said.
As explained by Caggiano, the New York State Workers’ Compensation system and the insurance industry are set up to frustrate workers to the point of giving up on fighting for the benefits they deserve. This is where Miller & Caggiano, LLP, steps in.
Ensuring Better Treatment
In addition to its work with unions such as Police Benevolent Associations, Teamsters, and other trade and municipal unions, Miller & Caggiano, LLP, also commits a considerable amount of time and resources to ensure that the working men and women of New York get decent contracts, benefits, and that their voices are heard.
As Caggiano explained, the firm does not practice in politics, but it does get involved politically for the purpose of furthering the benefits of workers, both union and non-union alike.
“It is not the main focus of our practice, but when you are dealing with labor unions, you have to get involved,” he said. “You must be all in.”
Giving Back
The firm is closely involved in charitable endeavors, such as the American Cancer Society, Autism Awareness, Special Olympics, and fundraising for various unions.
“We will do a lot of fundraising, and we will host a lot of events for a lot of these various causes,” he said. Examples of such events include charitable hockey and softball tournaments that Miller & Caggiano, LLP, sponsors to give back to the law enforcement community.
As one of the first law firms to embrace the different ethnicities within each union, Miller & Caggiano, LLP, supports the Desi, LGBTQ, Hispanic, Asian Jade, Steuben, Emerald, Guardian, and Columbia societies within various unions.
“We like to make sure that we are inclusive of everyone that may be within the workforce,” Caggiano stated.
Veterans are also a key contingent of Miller & Caggiano, LLP, clientele.
“We get involved with our veterans in any way we can help them,” Caggiano said. “We like to support them 100%.”
Miller & Caggiano, LLP additionally represents veterans when they go for their disability claims from the VA Benefits Administration.
As an integral part of the community and a leader in the labor movement, Miller & Caggiano, LLP, believes in the ethos of giving back.
“We make sure that a percentage of every dollar that this firm makes is given back to the people that allow us to make that money,” Caggiano said. “That has always been our model, that has always been our mantra.”
